Rita Bergwitz, 86, of Evansville, passed away at home on Saturday, February 28, 2026, surrounded by family.

Rita was born on November 27, 1939, in Evansville to the late Carl, Sr. and Barbara (Bender) Zenthoefer. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Riverbend Association, the Owls, the Red Hat Society, and Rita was Fall Festival Queen in 1954. Rita worked in the cafeteria at Mater Dei High School for over 10 years.

Surviving Rita is her husband of 66 years, Ed Bergwitz; daughters, Debra Gores and Angie (Jeff) Decker; sons, Tony (Billie) Bergwitz, Michael (Soon) Bergwitz, and Ed (Elizabeth) Bergwitz; sisters, Helen Hardesty and Rosalie Edwards; brother, Daniel Zenthoefer; nine grandchildren, David James, Todd Bergwitz, Emily Gores, Mallory Gores, Eric Bergwitz, Phil Bergwitz, Ashley Bergwitz, William Bergwitz, and Jessica Decker; 13 great grandchildren, Damion, Dakota, Katelynn, Makaylah, Sydney, Haley Jo, Kylee, Hunter, Cecilia, Nickolace, Dylan, Shelby, and Decker; and six great great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Harrison, Mary Ann Berry, and Cecelia Mayer; and by her brothers, Carl Zenthoefer, Jr. and Thomas Zenthoefer.

There will be a Memorial Mass held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 6, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Friends may visit with the family from 9:00 AM until service time on Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2701 West Franklin Street.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN.
