Robert Louis (Bob) Barnes, 81, of Lexington, passed away at his home on Friday, May 30, 2025. He was born June 24, 1943, in Chicago, IL, to the late Leo E. and Rose L. Zanzie Barnes. He graduated from Lexington Catholic High School in 1961, and from the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, in 1966. He subsequently served his country in Vietnam as an officer on the USCG Cutter "Half Moon". After leaving the Coast Guard, he worked as a computer programmer and software developer for various central Kentucky businesses, including Toyota, Valvoline, and Fayette County Bar Association. Additionally, he earned his Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Kentucky in 1975.
Bob was a life-long runner, completing numerous marathons in various cities. He was also one of a small group of runners who completed the Bluegrass 10K in Lexington every year since its inception, 48 years.
He is survived by two sisters, Mona Barnes Vass and Debbie Barnes Greene both of Lexington; two nephews, Andrew Greene, Tacoma, WA, and Nathan Greene, Port Orchard, WA, and two great nephews, Ezra and Elias Greene. He was preceded in death by his nephew James E. Auberry II.
Bob's Celebration of Life will be held on June 19, beginning with visitation at 10 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m., and then a reception/luncheon in the parish hall. Interment will be immediately after, at Lexington Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Fayette or Woodford Humane Society, or to St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Church.
