Robert Harland Blanchard, age 83, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday morning, June 20, 2024, while he was doing what he loved to do most, riding his bicycle. The son of the late Harland and Betty (Aldrich) Blanchard, he was born on April 15, 1941 in St. Clair, Michigan. Bob graduated from St. Clair High School and went on to serve his country with the U.S. Navy. He worked as an estimator in the construction field throughout Michigan for several years before moving to Houghton Lake in 1976. From 1984 until 1992 he owned and operated the Long Branch Saloon in Houghton Lake. He enjoyed fishing and was a member of the Eagles Club. Bob's true passion was cycling. Over the years he has completed several coast-to-coast trips with Ride Across America, including one to Alaska. A couple of months ago, Bob departed on bicycle from his home in Bradenton, Florida, rode all the way up to Houghton Lake, and was enroute to St. Clair when he passed away. This final trip pushed him over the 200,000-mile mark, an achievement that was his longtime goal.
Bob is survived by his three children, Janie (Gene) Goyette of St. Clair, Scott (Debbie) Blanchard of Florida and Tom (Nicole) Blanchard of Houghton Lake; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; his two sisters, Barb Dodea and Brenda (Carl) Miller; and his special friend, Judi Windle. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a grandchild and a brother-in-law, Frank Dodea.
It was Bob's desire for cremation to take place and that no services be held. Private interment will be held later at Hillside Cemetery in St. Clair. Funeral home arrangements are being provided by the Trahan Funeral Chapel. For on-line sentiments: www.trahanfc.com
