Born on June 11th, 1942 to Paul L. Cathell, Sr. and raised by his paternal grandmother, Lorena Cline Cathell (Gram). He attended Mary C.I. Williams Elementary School, Bayard Middle School, and Wilmington High School, Class of 1960. While at Wilmington High School, he met his love and future wife, Mary N. (Ruff) Cathell, and together they raised four sons: Robert J. Cathell Jr., Eugene F. Cathell, Scott M. Cathell and Curtis J. Cathell.
Robert was a proud lifelong member of the Millwrights Local 1545 alongside his father, Paul, and his brother, Bill. He enjoyed antique car shows, hunting, fishing, crabbing and his memberships in various local clubs around Wilmington including: The Defiance Club, The West End Rod and Gun Club, and the VFW in Browntown.
He was predeceased by his father, Paul L. Cathell Sr.; his paternal grandmother, Lorena Cline Cathell (Gram); his sisters, Margaret Campbell, Doris Olszewski, Christine Cathell; his brothers, William Cathell, David Cathell; his brother-in-law, Gene Olszewski; and his nephew, Mark Campbell.
Robert is survived by his sons, Robert J. Cathell, Jr. (Paddi), Eugene F. Cathell, Scott M. Cathell (Linda), Curtis J. Cathell (Meredith); his oldest brother, Paul L. Cathell, Jr. (Cassie); his four grandchildren, Emily Cathell, Rachel Cathell, Karli Cathell, and Robert Cathell III; his four great-grandchildren, Cora, Sonny, Elias, and Louis; many nieces and nephews; and extended relatives on the Ruff side of the family.
Services, including interment at Lombardy Cemetery, shall be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Lorelton Foundation, 2200 W. 4th St., Wilmington, DE 19805 OR to the Amedisys Foundation at Amedisys Inc., 3854 American Way, Suite A, Baton Rouge, LA 70816. Both organizations provided excellent care to Robert while he was under their care. The Cathell family would like to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to all of the wonderful individuals who were involved in Robert's care the last couple years and months while he was on his final journey.
