Robert Leo Gillard Sr. departed this life and entered into eternal rest on February 17, 2025, at the age of 84. He was born on August 23, 1939, in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Eugene Gillard Sr. and the late Pauline Sparks. Robert was predeceased by his grandparents: John Homer Gillard, Louise Grammer, Issac Sparks, and Constance Pierre.
He was a devoted husband of 67 years to his wife, Ella Mae Conway. Loving father to his children Robert L. Gillard Jr., Renee L. Gillard, and the late Robin Gillard. Proud grandfather to his two grandsons, Robert L. Gillard III and Jonathan A. Gillard, along with his great-grandchildren: Amani, Kaliyah, Caiden, and Nayeli.
Robert was the brother of nine siblings: the late Veronica Lawson, the late Glazina Kay, the late Adora Lawrence, Marva Phillips, Melba Smith Dudley, Helen Rogers (Burnell), Constance Dunbar, Eugene Gillard Jr. (Irene), and Cynthia Gillard Johnson; brother-in-law of Ernestine Smith, Lillian Conway, the late Alfred, Ernest Jr., Earl, Claudette, and Nina Conway.
He leaves behind his beloved friends Anthony and Claudia Smith, several cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, brothers and sisters of Chalmette, Crowder Blvd, Elysian Fields and Louisa St. Churches of Christ.
Robert retired from the Jackson Barracks after working for 37 years. He enjoyed landscaping and reading. He will be remembered for his listening ear and teachings of Christ. Robert's words of wisdom to his children was "When you learn better, do better."
Robert was laid to rest at Garden of Memories Cemetery, 4900 Airline Dr., Metairie, Louisiana 70001.
