Robert Allen Hagins Jr.

Robert Allen Hagins, Jr. (Bob, Bobby) of Des Moines passed away on September 11, 2022.
Bob's wonderful sense of humor and kind spirit will be cherished by his family and friends. He will be deeply missed.
Bob was born in Des Moines on August 5, 1952 to Robert Allen Hagins, Sr. and Bette (Christensen) Hagins. They lived in Earlham from 1958 to 1961, later moving to Indianola. During his time in Earlham, he welcomed his little sister, Diane. He later married Cindy Albert with whom he shares a daughter.
Bob graduated from Indianola High School in 1971. He served proudly in the U.S. Army under the 12th Engineer Battalion as a Combat Construction Specialist. Bob's career began at Des Moines General Hospital, where he became an Engineer. He remained there throughout the transition to Mercy Hospital and worked at Mercy West until his retirement in 2017.
Bob is survived by his daughter Lydia (Shaun) Johnson; his mother and stepfather, Bette and Jack Nichols; his sister, Diane Hagins (Steve Oswalt).
It was a very special occasion when Bob's daughter, Lydia Hagins, and Shaun Johnson were married on October 12, 2019. Bob was very proud to walk his beautiful daughter down the aisle.
Growing up, Bob had many interests: astronomy and space (purchasing very nice telescopes); gardening - he loved gardening as a child and continued gardening as an adult; he loved camping and fishing with his friends, especially in Arkansas; coin collecting throughout the years. He was a Boy Scout and broke his arm while at camp (an interesting story). He was very interested in politics and as a teenager campaigned for Eugene McCarthy in 1968. He and a friend decided they were going to try to see every candidate that campaigned nearby. He loved Laurel and Hardy movies. His favorite television show was the Incredible Dr. Pol, which he watched all the time. He was an avid Cardinals baseball fan.
One of Bob's favorite memories was spending a week on a sailboat in the Caribbean with friends.
Bob traveled throughout Europe while he was stationed in Germany with the army. At this time, his father was traveling in Italy, and Bob met him there to spend time with him.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Bob's cremains will be placed at Veterans' Cemetery in Van Meter.
Memorials are suggested for The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation or a food bank of your choice.
