Robert W. Herbst

Robert W. Herbst, 75, passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at University Medical Center at Plainsboro in Plainsboro, New Jersey.
Born on September 7, 1949, in Piscataway, NJ, Robert was the son of the late Britton and Louise (Carbone) Herbst. He was raised in Somerset and later lived in New Brunswick before settling in Kendall Park, where he made a warm and loving home with his family.
Robert honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era, achieving the rank of Specialist Fifth Class. He enlisted on January 20, 1970, and was honorably discharged on September 20, 1971. Following his military service, Robert built a successful career in information technology, working for many years at Merrill Lynch before retiring from ADP.
He was a proud and active member of the Brunswick Moose Lodge in North Brunswick and a former member of the New Brunswick Elks Lodge. Robert found great joy in life's simple pleasures; especially fishing, with a particular fondness for ice fishing. He had a natural gift for fixing things and was known as a skilled tinkerer among those close to him.
Above all, Robert will be remembered as a devoted husband, a caring brother, and a generous friend. His love and steadfast presence were a constant source of strength to his family.
Robert was predeceased by his son, Christopher Herbst, and his brother, David Herbst.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Janet Herbst; his brother, Bruce Herbst; his sister, Sandra Drowling; and a close-knit extended family including Mary Jane Burger, Stephanie Karoly, Steven Karoly, Donna Mikolai, Lucy Mikolai, Brenda O'Callaghan, and Bill O'Callaghan. He will also be missed by many dear friends and extended family.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at Gleason Funeral Home, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick, NJ.
Funeral services will take place at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the funeral home, with Msgr. Joseph Curry officiating. All services will conclude at the funeral home.
