Robert Hoffman, of Hatboro, PA died on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at his home. He was 90 years old, one day shy of his 91st birthday.
He was the beloved husband of 63 years to Mary Brooker Hoffman.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Simpson Hoffman and Ethel Venet Hoffman.
The great loves of Bob's life were many. At the top was his wife whom he beckoned from every corner of the house at least once an hour with shouts of "Mare," only increasing in volume when he could no longer climb the stairs; followed by his three grandsons whose activities he cheered with great fervor; his children, sister and extended family whom he could drive insane with questioning but who never doubted the depth of his love; his friends from Central High, Moore Business Forms, and the neighborhood; the Phillies; the entire city of Philadelphia; classical music and classic movies; cribbage; any chocolate; any beach; and a cannoli from Termini's. Bob read the Philadelphia Inquirer every day and saved the Word Jumbles for his grandsons' visits.
To have the honor of witnessing Bob's life is to know the power of caring. No one who met Bob would walk away thinking that man doesn't stand for something. His presence could feel like a freight train landing in your lap. But this freight train ran on much more than sheer power. He was a master conversationalist and could engage a stranger in at least a 30-minute dialogue. The talk would flow easily, always back and forth, usually wrapping up with the best Italian restaurant or latest Netflix recommendations.
He was fiercely loyal to his friends and family, saving and doing without so that he could provide the most of whatever they needed. Even though they weren't the ball sports he so passionately followed, when his grandsons got involved with competitive go-kart racing, ultimate frisbee, and running AV for college basketball games, Bob was there, watching, cheering and even donating when needed. His 2001 Mercury Sable sits in one grandson's driveway as a reminder to take great care of the things and people you love.
Bob won countless "Sales Executive" of the Year awards during his over 40-year career with Moore Business Forms. His hard-driving work ethic bled into his leisure-time activities. The family vacations he planned required participants rise before the crack of "The Today Show" and tour everything within a 15-mile radius on hourly intervals. He was a huge believer in travel and visited all 50 states, as well as numerous overseas trips. Bob was a proud veteran, serving as a Private First Class, with the entirety of his military career spent in frigid but peaceful Alaska.
While the lives of those who loved him now have a gaping hole, the many memories he left will hopefully fill some of the void. Memories of love and laughter, such as the mid-life crisis Datsun 240Z that his 6'4" frame barely fit into; 24-hour car rides to Florida with very conditional stops; his pioneering (at the time) 3D TV that he had no idea how to work; insistence that his grandsons share the same level of old movie fandom; the ritualistic trip to Popeye's after a beach outing; his nickname "Flamo" based on his tendency to some would say burn barbecue chicken; grilling in any weather; and above all else, holding your family and friends close at all times.
In addition to his beloved wife, Mary, Robert is also survived by his three children, Steven Hoffman of Horsham, PA; Ellen Becker and her husband Jeffrey of Jacksonville, FL; Robin Hoffman and her partner Emile Lafond of Montclair, NJ; his sister Merle Bass and her husband Sidney of Scottsdale, AZ. He is also survived by his grandsons Jacob Becker, Andre Lafond, and Max Lafond.
His services and interment will be held privately by the family. Send Flowers And Gifts
