An old schoolmate, who lived in a troubled home, said that he always looked forward to sitting next to Bob because he found solace in his presence. It wasn't because Bob entertained him, but because his quiet, gentle demeanor was more than enough to soothe his spirit.
This is not a surprise to anyone. For a man with such impeccable taste, the lasting impression he made was a deep connection with kindness to anyone in a very short amount of time. It was not an innate quality, but something he crafted early in life because he valued people's feelings.
Bob was the quintessential gentleman: dapper, courteous, well-mannered, and reserved. However, behind the face that rarely smiled or laughed was a sweet, generous, true gentle man. A perfect weekend for him involved taking the dogs for a long walk, sipping a Starbucks Caramel Macchiato, a leisurely car ride, quietly watching mindless TV programs with Liam beside his head and Finn on his chest, shopping for pre-owned luxury items on his iPad, and enjoying a foot massage from his husband.
Bob was born in Paterson, New Jersey, on November 23, 1957, to Charles Negri and Julia Meyer. He had older brothers, Charles and Richard. He grew up in Lincoln Park and attended Boonton High School. He put himself through college, obtaining his BS in Administration from William Paterson University after a year at Northeastern University in Boston. With over forty years of experience in finance in Manhattan, he was an employee of Sullivan and Cromwell LLP for nearly 20 years. He is survived by his nieces, Ann Dohm and Christine Jandorf, his two Pomeranians, Liam and Finn, and his husband and life partner for almost 30 years, Rey Edward Wong. He had been in the hospital for the past 40 days, fighting to move to his new house in Rancho Mirage, California, to start his retirement with his husband.
The hardships affecting his health slowly diminished his ability to enjoy what many would find pleasurable, yet his strength and determination to live for simple joys inspired many. He didn't seek to change the world, but because of his courage and beautiful soul, he unintentionally dwelled in the hearts of his family, friends, and colleagues forever.
On the night of August 10, after a beautiful day in Livingston at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, the dusk was brushed with beautiful strokes of purplish clouds and a vanilla sky as his niece held his hand. Not long after that, while "All My Life" by America played on his iPhone, alone with his husband lying next to him, the unseasonably cool evening breeze carried his soul away from his husband's arms at 9:25. Free of pain at last but we are never free of his memories.
Visitation is on August 16, 2-6 and funeral service is on August 17 at 10 am. Instead of flowers, please consider donating to Mount Pleasant Animal Shelter. If you do so, kindly add a note that you are donating to honor Robert K. Negri's memory, for his compassion and kindness towards animals. Otherwise, consistent with his elegant taste, Bob loved white tulips, or white flowers in general. https://njshelter.org/ If you do decide to join us, for refreshments planning, kindly complete the form using the link below.
