Robert Louis Rogers, 85, of South Bend passed away Saturday, January 28, after a long- term illness. He was born February 4, 1937 to Louis J. and Mary Rogers (both deceased) in South Bend. He was married for nearly 60 years to Franciene J. LePard (deceased). He and Franciene had three sons, John who passed away at birth, Ronald (deceased, wife Peggy), and his eldest son James (wife Rita) of South Bend who survives. He also leaves three grandchildren, Austin, Hillary (Colin), and Meredith.
Robert retired from the South Bend Fire Department and subsequently retired from the University of Notre Dame Fire Department. He graduated from South Bend Washington High School in 1955 where he set several swimming records and pitched a baseball no-hitter. He was also an Air Force veteran. His nickname Wally was given to him by fellow fishermen due to his fondness for walleye fishing.
His memorial service and wake will be held at St. Joseph Funeral Home located on the corner of Mayflower and Sample Street on Saturday, March 11 at 10am. Friends may start to visit with the family at 9am. His interment alongside his wife will be held following his wake, also at St. Joseph Funeral Home immediately following his memorial service.
