Robert Edward Sickel, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather died peacefully on Wednesday, March 8th, 2023. He was 88 years old.
Born December 9th, 1934, in
Woodbury, NJ, Bob graduated from Woodbury High School in 1953 and attended Gettysburg College where he received a BA in Business and was a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Throughout his life, Bob remained very active with Gettysburg College and his SAE fraternity chapter. Bob also served in ROTC at Gettysburg and after graduation was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army for two years, promoted to First Lieutenant, and remained in the Army Reserves for the nine years following where he retired as a Captain.
On September 21st, 1957 Bob married the "love of his life" Peggy Smith. He and Peggy filled their home with five children and welcomed all into their homes; everyone had a seat at their table. In addition, Bob was a devoted and loving uncle to his three nieces and nephew.
Bob successfully owned and operated Sickel's Shopping Center. As an owner/operator of ShopRite Supermarkets, Bob was elected to the Wakefern Board of Directors at the young age of 28 years old and expanded the shopping center in 1968 with the addition of opening Sickel's ShopRite Liquors. As a destination shopping center in Woodbury and the surrounding area, Bob took great pride in providing employment opportunities for hundreds and supporting the community in which he served. In addition, Bob was an active member of the Woodbury Rotary Club for decades.
Bob was pre-deceased by his loving wife of 63 years Peggy (nee Smith) Sickel. He is survived by his eldest daughter Margaret Helen Casullo Hertrich, his eldest son, Robert E. Sickel, Jr, Son Daniel P. Sickel, Son Steven S. Sickel and wife Stacey Farmer Sickel and daughter Elizabeth Ann Sickel McFadden and her husband Brian McFadden and his loving grandchildren: Robert Casullo and his wife Luisa Silva Casullo, Joseph Casullo, Elena Sickel Dudley and husband Nicholas Dudley, Sean Wus, Ian Sickel, Sidney Sickel, Caroline Sickel, Lilly Sickel, and Jackson McFadden, and his loving great granddaughters Emma and Isabel Casullo.
The abiding memory of Bob was to find him on his horse riding through the fields of Gloucester County, walking the aisles of his stores (usually with one of his dogs by his side), and sharing his love of history. He was a tremendous provider to his children and grandchildren, unselfish with his time and was a great mentor to many throughout his life. He was the epitome of men of his generation - loyal, responsible, and a strong work ethic. The efforts he put forth in life were admirable and honorable.
In lieu of flowers we ask that honorable donations be made to Memorial Presbyterian Church of
