Robert James Spooner, 88, of Covington, Louisiana, passed away peacefully at home on December 25, 2023. He was born on January 21, 1935, to James and Beatrice Spooner, and grew up in Ogdensburg, NY. There he met and married Martha, the love of his life for over 66 years.
Robert was a loving and devoted family man. He married Martha on August 24, 1957, and together they built a life with their family filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. He was a dedicated and supportive father to his six children, Marc, Chris, Sherry, Greg, Joan, and Rick.
Robert was a sales executive, dedicating 30 years of service to Kraft Foods, Inc. before retiring at the age of 59. Robert had a passion for football and history. His enthusiasm for his beloved Clemson Tigers never faltered since his days in college as a starting fullback. He had the privilege of scoring a touchdown in the 1957 Orange Bowl. Also, later in his 80’s, his high school Alma Mater began to award Hall of Fame designations to athletes from the 1950’s to the present. He was the first Hall of Fame recipient of this honor for his outstanding performance as a four-year, four sport athlete.
Whether he was fishing, traveling, camping, or on family vacations, Robert found joy in the simple pleasures of life. His warm and humorous personality touched the lives of all who knew him.
Robert had a strong Catholic faith and was actively involved in the church throughout his life.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Martha Sherry Spooner, and his devoted children Marc Spooner (Helen), Christopher Spooner, Sherry Spooner-Finney (Michael), Gregory Spooner (Patricia), Joan Spooner-Harris, Richard Spooner (Paige). He is also survived by his grandchildren Aimee Spooner-Mehnert (Kyle), James Spooner (dec.), Robert Spooner (Jessica), Richard Harris, Hallie Spooner, Shelby Spooner, Teddy Spooner, Nicholas Harris, Sean Spooner, Bennett Spooner, and Garrett Spooner.
Robert is preceded in death by James Joseph Spooner (father), Beatrice Lassail Spooner (mother), and Richard Robert Spooner (brother).
A Requiem Mass to celebrate Robert’s life will be held Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 1:00 PM. Visitation will begin at 11:30 AM until 1:00 PM. St. Jane de Chantal Parish Catholic Church, 72040 Maple Street, Abita Springs, Louisiana 70420 The family would like to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. Robert will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him and loving him. May he rest in peace in the presence of God the Father, Son, and Spirit.
