Robert Ammon Wessner, age 77, of Shelbyville, TN, passed from this life on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital. Robert was born on July 1, 1947, in Shelbyville, TN, he was the son of the late Irvin Edward Wessner and Alda Delores Boyce Wessner.
Robert worked with Tillett Brothers Construction before going out on his own to start Wessner's Auto Haul, where he operated for over 30 years; he worked for the Shelbyville Fire Department for over 37 years serving as a fireman and as a Shift Commander until his retirement in 2011.
He served his country in the U.S. Army and dedicated his career to public service as a fireman with the City of Shelbyville Fire Department from where he retired after many years of distinguished service. His bravery and commitment to ensuring the safety of his community marked his tenure.
Robert was an avid Harley Davidson enthusiast, a talented mechanic, and an ambassador for the King Museum. In his free time Robert drove a bus for the Eaglette Basketball Team and city events.
To his family, Robert was a true patriarch and set a foundation for his loved ones to lean on for support and wisdom.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Donna Lovinia Wessner; his children, Lyn (Dan) Dowd of Dandridge, TN, April (Gary) Jackson of Birmingham, AL, and Josh (Lauren) Wessner of Shelbyville, TN. Robert was a cherished grandfather to Ashley Dowd, Michael Dowd, Russ Flade, Shelby West, Taylar Wessner, Chase Wessner, and Luke Jackson. He also leaves behind his siblings, Kennith (Carla) Wessner, Vonda Lee (Johnny) Cawthron and Carl (Melva) Wessner all of Shelbyville; also, several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by a grandson, Samuel Jackson.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 24, 2025, in the Chapel of Doak-Howell Funeral Home with Bro. Mark Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Crowell's Chapel Cemetery in Unionville.
Visitation with the family will be held 2-5 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, February 23, 2025, at the funeral home.
Memorial contribution may be made to: Shelbyville Firefighter's Foundation (by mail: 111 Lane Parkway Shelbyville, TN 37160), a group that Robert was proud to be a part of every year during their annual Children's Christmas Toy Drive. Alternatively, donations may be made to Shriners Children's Hospital @ www.shrinerschildren.org.
