Roger would swing open the Wahr Hardware Store front door and yell, "Hey, beautiful.", often without looking to see if there was a female in sight. As a USN retiree, Roger and I could speak in military acronym. I will miss him.

I used to work at a local bank in Manistee. Roger would come in every day for his coffee and shoot the breeze with us. Roger was a very intelligent man with a huge heart. I believe we get blessed with certain people in our lives for a reason. He taught me so many things. I am definitely blessed to have known this man! Roger will always hold a special place in my heart.
Rest peacefully my friend!

I just found out about Roger's passing. I am Rick Tetsworth, a neighbor who lived by Roger in Manistee. While many considered Roger crazy, and I know he certainly had challenges, I had a soft spot for him as a veteran. He would wave and yell at passerbys, and visit local merchants who really did not want him around, due to his appearance and demeanor. I would occassionally stop by to chat with him. While many of his stories seemed disconnected with reality, I found he was intelligent and thoughtful in some of the things he said. He spoke often of his service, tall tales of sort, which no doubt affected his mental capacities. At times we would quaff a beer, and he sometimes spoke of his mother and father. I recall the mentioning of his son and daughter, with a bit of sadness in his voice. Again, he liked being looked at as eccentric, but I detected hints of a man that had gone through a great deal in his service to his country, and his life. Whenever my own two sons came home to visit me, we would always make an effort to visit him, just to share a bit of respecftul comraderie. Upon us walking away, he would salute and yell "Be Careful Be Carefull!" We will miss him. RIP Roger
