GREENFIELD - Ronald Edward Dettlinger, age 87, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2024, in his home with his loving wife by his side. She cared for him for the last 38 years. Ron was born on January 23, 1937, in Louisville, KY to his late parents, John and Mary Dettlinger. He had a brief stint in the Navy. After the Navy, he met his wife, Dorothy (Dot) and was married on October 6, 1956. Ron's career path led him to Burrough/Unisys Corporation for the next 30 years where he was the branch manager before retiring. His hard work ethic set a great example for his children and provided a comfortable lifestyle for his family.
Prior to his disability, Ron was incredibly talented with his hands. He could build and repair about anything, including home remodeling, decks, and automobile maintenance. He loved gardening, playing cards and boating. And he did not mind a beer or two.
Ron and Dot were blessed with four children. They had two sons, Butch (Connie) Dettlinger and Chuck (Kim) Dettlinger, along with two daughters, Becky (Becky Buening) Dettlinger and Sandy (Chuck) Theobald. Ron is also survived by five grandchildren, Missy (Clay) Thoreson, Bennett (Hayley) Dettlinger, Cameron Dettlinger, Nikki (Dan) Lynch, Leslie (John Moguel) Theobald, as well as two in-law grandchildren, Mikel (Jon Hixon) Theobald and Britany Theobald. Ron was also blessed with nine great grandchildren, Sydera, Chelsea, Brielle, Axel, Ethan, Drew, Collin, Norah, and Charlotte. Ron leaves behind three sisters, Donna (Ron) Perkins, Linda (Les) Demaree and MaryAnn Nunn.
Ron was proceeded in death by his grandson Chuck Theobald IV and brother-in-law Tom Nunn.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 4, 2024, from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 5, 2024, at 10:00am at St. Michael Catholic Church, 519 Jefferson Blvd, Greenfield, IN 46140. Fr. Bill Stump will be officiating. Burial will follow the Mass at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
The family would like to thank the caretakers, Trena McCarty, Reesha Johnson, and Intrepid Hospice for their loving care.
