Ronald "Poppy" Goodwin, 83, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2024, peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Ron was a true warrior, overcoming countless physical ailments over the last several years and was never one to complain. His family is comforted in knowing he is now free from years of pain.
Ron was born December 14, 1940 to the late James Muryl Goodwin and Oma Estelle Rake.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sharon Goodwin, and two children, Kelly Glick (Todd) of Bowling Green, OH and Kara Stauffer (Bruce) of Davisville, WV, Poppy's beloved grandchildren Stefan Legg (Lauren), Luke Winters, Maren Simon (Tony), Rylee Stauffer (Patrick), Tanner Stauffer, and great-granddaughter, Ivy. He is also survived by his siblings, one sister Lois Kerns (Dave), and four brothers, Michael "Mick" Goodwin (Patricia), Jan Hunt (Helen), Steve Hunt (Karen), and Wayde Hunt (Libby), nieces, nephews, and several treasured friends.
In addition to his parents, he's preceded in death by his sister, Eileen Graham and brother Jim Goodwin.
Ron was an incredibly hard worker and had a dedicated career as a foreman, working at BorgWarner, later known as GE. Ron was a highschool graduate of Parkersburg High School. As a young 17-year-old man, Ron joined the United States Marines and served his country for 8 years. His family relishes the stories he'd often share of his time in the military.
Ron's life was centered greatly on his family, and he had immense pride in his daughters, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. Few things brought more of a smile to Ron's face than spending time with his family. His grandchildren lovingly call him, "Poppy", and believe he's the best Poppy there's ever been. They remember him as steadfast and silly, helping build lego towers, complying with his granddaughters putting barrettes in his hair, and fishing. They were always enamored with his storytelling.
Ron was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed making trips to the mountains of West Virginia for trout fishing. Ron was a woodworker, truly a 'jack of all trades' type handy-man, and had a knack for fixing just about anything. His pancakes were absolutely legendary. Ron had a canny sense of humor and lived a life of gratitude. He was fiercely loyal, dependable, and a person of great integrity. The rock of our family.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 5, 2024, from 4:00-6:00 pm at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home in Vienna, WV, followed by a brief service beginning at 6:00pm with Don Yeager officiating. Ron's family will hold a private interment at a later date.
A special thanks to Amedisys Hospice for their care and compassion over the past few weeks, and the numerous physicians who've cared for Ron over the last several years.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
