Ronald Scherer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by A. D. Porter & Sons Funeral Home - Downtown on Jan. 10, 2026.
Ronald was born on October 28, 1942, in Chicago, IL, the only child of Earl and Elizabeth Scherer, who preceded him in death. In his youth, Ronald enjoyed playing checkers and collecting model cars and train sets. He was a member of Jack and Jill of America and had a lifelong curiosity for how things worked. He especially enjoyed tinkering with electronics, often taking apart radios, toasters, and vacuums just to put them back together again.

Ronald graduated from Central High School in 1960 and dedicated 27 years of service as a committed employee of the Transit Authority of River City (TARC).

He accepted Christ at a young age and was a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church. Ronald often let his cherished record collection speak for him. His musical tastes spanned generations, from Dinah Washington to Prince. He also had a fondness for collecting unique smoking pipes, of which he often said symbolized "Peace".

Ronald shared his smooth baritone voice with occasional pop-up doo-wop groups in his teen years, and could be found participating in Men's Choirs throughout his Christian Journey

Ronald was a consistent supporter of Crusade for Children and regularly enjoyed attending the annual Delta Sigma Theta Day at the Races, with proceeds helping to fund college scholarships.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 18 years, Donna Bullitt-Scherer, with whom he enjoyed traveling across the country. His Daughter Erica LaRon and son Ronald Errol Scherer Jr. At times, circumstances kept them apart, yet they were always close in spirit and will forever hold him in their hearts.

Ronald has three grandchildren, Mackenzie Scherer, Evan Bibb and Ethan Bibb.

Those who knew Ronald will remember him as a man of few words with a deep appreciation for music, faith, and the simple joys of life, someone who expressed love not always through words, but through presence and earnestness.
