Ronald "Ronnie" Dean Simmons was born on July 2, 1947, in Des Moines, IA, to Elmer Tolson and Barbara Moore. A beloved figure in the Des Moines community, he passed away on August 26, 2025, leaving behind a profound legacy of kindness, compassion, and unwavering commitment to his neighbors. Ronnie's life was characterized by his dedication to serving others, his passionate spirit, and his love for his family and community.

A graduate of the University of Iowa, where he finished in the top 3% summa cum laude, Ronnie's academic accomplishments were a testament to his hard work and determination. His career spanned multiple avenues, including notable positions at Estes Funeral Home and helping build the Main Post Office in Des Moines with his construction crew, as well as his work as a lab technician at the University of Iowa. He contributed to significant construction projects, including those at Soul Village on Forest Avenue, always striving to leave a positive mark on the city he cherished.

Ronald was known for his vibrant personality. He was a dedicated community activist. Ronald was often seen leading parades and organizing efforts to promote social justice, as well as providing food and assistance to those in need. A passionate advocate for rehabilitation, he worked tirelessly to support those in need, helping prisoners find a new path in life. His love for family was profound, and he embraced every opportunity to uplift those around him, especially children and animals. Ronald's warm smile brightened Bingo nights, and his enthusiasm for gaming extended to scratch-offs, making him a familiar, cheerful presence in both family gatherings and community events.

Ronald lived by a simple yet profound motto: "Life is Simple, keep it that way!" He indeed made his own life a testament to simplicity through the authenticity of his actions and the generosity of his heart. His passing leaves a void in the lives of those who knew him, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who had the honor of sharing in his journey.

Ronald is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Tolson and Barbara Moore, siblings, Johnny, Michael, Robert Simmons, grandson, Marshawn Walker, Ezra Butts, Alhamisi Butts, and nephew, Choice Elliston. His beloved dogs, Buster and Lady, who provided him joy and companionship, will also be missed.

Ronald is survived by his loving life partner, Nancy Ann Hanson, and his children, Rhonda (Jonathan) Murray, Paul Walker, Raissa Burrell-Simmons, Veronicia Thomas, Ronnie Walker, Tracey Piper-Hanson, Theresa Wheeler, Ralonda (Paul) Butts, LG Du'Pree (Jennifer) Hanson, and Deidra (Joe Polk) Hanson, and Ronsson Hanson as well as a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also remembered with love by his siblings, Diane Brooks, Linda Simmons, Billy Simmons, Patty Aaron (Chester), and Tony (Berdine) Simmons.
