Rosa Lee Chavis was born September 21, 1937, in Darlington County to the late Lennis and Lillian Scott. As a beloved wife,
mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and entrepreneur, Rosa Lee embodied strength, love, and grace with unwavering faith.
She was educated in Darlington County schools attending St. John and Oates Elementary before attending Butler High School in 1951 and graduating from Spaulding High School in 1954. After high school, Rosa Lee moved to Brooklyn, New York, to attend Robert's Beauty College where she graduated with honors in 1955. As a result of her excellent grades and dedication to her craft, she was offered a position as a teacher/instructor at the school. Staying true to her plan, she declined because she would be moving back to South Carolina to live but gained valuable experience working for two years at Le'Mars Beauty Salon in New York.
Once back in South Carolina, she married the late Cab Roosevelt Chavis, the love of her life. She became a faithful member at St. John United Methodist Church and allowed God to use her in many capacities. She served as president of the usher board for three years, President of the St. John Gospel Choir for ten years, President of the United Methodist Women for four years and sang with the choir for over forty years. In addition, she worked with the Council of Ministers for three years being very instrumental in laying asphalt on the church grounds and served as the church's secretary for another three years. She was also proud to be a Lay Leader at the church, a position she took over from her father. Above all, she was a God-fearing woman who lived her faith with compassion, humility and a love for others.
As a talented hairstylist and successful entrepreneur, Rosa Lee owned and operated La Rose Beauty Salon for over 64 years in
the Hartsville community. She became the first beautician in her region to begin doing the croquernole cold waving technique. Her commitment to her profession attracted thousands of people to her shop over the years where she transformed not only hair but the lives of all who visited. This was a testament to her love of people and the care she so willingly provided. Her presence from the community will be missed by all who knew her.
Rosa Lee leaves to cherish her loving memories: her children, Stanley (Karien) Chavis of Franklinton, NC; Geronell (the late Chauncey) Weston of Columbia, SC; Tyron (Eleanor) Chavis of
Lamar, SC; the late Palvolyn (Brenda) Chavis of Rembert, SC; extended son, Bishop Edward (Easter) Arthur of Centerville, SC; favored nephew, Woodrow Wilson, Jr. of Columbia, SC; sixteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and many other close relatives and very dear friends.
