With hearts full of love and gratitude, we announce that our beloved mother Rosalie Dilosa Thornton entered the realm of her Master peacefully Sunday, August 24, 2025 at the age of 96. Surrounded by her loving family, she departed this life with the same elegance, grace, strength and faith that she carried throughout her time on Earth. She did it her way!
Born on March 26, 1929 in New Orleans, Louisiana, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Georgana Dilosa, a devoted and beloved wife of the late Mr. Dudley Thornton, Sr., together they built a life anchored in love, devotion and family that grew into generations touched by her wisdom. Rosalie was a constant source of strength, wisdom, and unwavering support for her family and friends.
She was known for her incredible generosity, kindness and wisdom which she shared with everyone. She had a passion for people, traveling, playing cards, bingo and Cadillacs. Her joy in life was often found in her words of wisdom – "Live life with a passion" & "A Change Gone Come."
Rosalie is survived by her five children Gwendolyn Jones (late Cyril), Winslow Thornton, Sr. (Karen), James Thornton (Brenda), Yulonda Griffin (Marty) and Jacqueline Matthews (Robert), preceded by Terry Thornton. She was the proud grandmother of 15 grandkids, Jalonda, Stacy, Winslow, Jr., Cayetano (Tanny), Melika, Latashia, Ariane, Jacqueline, Tasha, Damara, Marti, Jonathan and Jadon, preceded by Nejuan & Joshua. Her siblings: Frank, Francis and Gloria, preceded by Jerome, Jospehine, Louis, Dorothy. She was blessed with 28 great grandkids and 6 great great grandkids and a host of other cherished family members. She was preceded by her three bonus children Dudley Jr., Annette and Benny who gave her 11 grandchildren.
Her legacy of love, warmth, and resilience will forever inspire us. She will be deeply missed but will forever remain in our hearts.
Relatives and friends of the family are all invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, August 29, 2025, 10:00AM, at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, 1923 St. Philip St., New Orleans, LA with Fr. Ajani Gibson, pastor, serving as the celebrant. Visitation will be held from 9:00AM until the hour of service. Interment Restlawn Memorial Park, Avondale, LA.
