Obituary of Roy Lee Mathis
Roy Lee Mathis died on June 2, 2022, at the Brookshire Nursing Center in Hillsborough, NC, due to a brief illness. He was 74.
Mr. Mathis was born on March 4, 1948, in Durham, NC, to his parents, Herman and Ruth Mathis. He graduated from Southern High School, and, in 1968, he entered the Air Force and was stationed in Korea. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. After being honorably discharged, he went to work at and retired from IBM and later AT&T.
Mr. Mathis was a lifelong lover of words. As a child he read the dictionary to learn new ones, and as an adult was an avid reader and loved a good crossword puzzle.
Mr. Mathis is survived by his wife Joanne of Bahama, NC; his son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Gray Mathis of Wake Forest, NC; his son and daughter-in-law, Joshua and Erin Mathis of Kensington, MD; his brother Winford Mathis; his brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Betty Mathis; four grandchildren, Eloise, Oliver, Theodore, and Otis; and many nieces and nephews.
As per Roy's request, there will be no funeral services. Walker's Funeral Home in Hillsborough will be assisting the family.
