March 10, 1935 – June 14, 2025
Roy Smotherman, 90, of Odessa, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025. Born on March 10, 1935, in Mountain View, Missouri, to Roy Granvelle and Mary Ellen Smotherman, Roy spent his formative years in San Antonio, where he graduated from Edison High School.
Roy began his working life driving a bread route for Rainbow Bakery, a job that reflected his strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family. In 1969, he moved his family to Odessa and began a 28-year career with Procter & Gamble, where he excelled as a salesman and earned numerous awards for his performance and professionalism.
After retiring, Roy embraced life as a rancher, a role that brought him great joy and peace. Alongside his late wife, Norma, he worked tirelessly on the land they loved. His innovation and perseverance were recognized when he was featured in the Odessa American for cultivating rare Bermuda hay and developing a custom drip irrigation system that sustained the crops through drought conditions.
A man of deep faith, Roy was devoted to his church community. He poured his heart into youth ministry and later worked with the singles class, always eager to witness to others about the Lord. He was known for his powerful prayers, generous spirit, and his ability to lift others through both his faith and his sense of humor. Roy never missed a chance to pull a prank or tell a joke—bringing laughter wherever he went.
A lifelong Mojo football fan, Roy was a proud supporter of the Permian Panthers, rarely missing a game. He also cheered faithfully for the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Granvelle and Mary Ellen Smotherman, and his wife Jackie Smotherman.
He is survived by his daughters, Stacy Hollingsworth (Roger) of San Antonio, and Susan Drennan (Greg) of Odessa; grandchildren, Erika Reed (Bryan) of Odessa, Jarod Drennan (Molly) of Beaufort, South Carolina, and Trevor Lumpkin of San Antonio; and great-grandchildren, Brady, Ava, and Charlie Reed of Odessa, and Jack and Will Drennan of Beaufort.
Roy leaves behind a legacy defined by faith, family, hard work, and laughter. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family would like to express their gratitude towards Hospice of Midland, the staff at Brookdale, and The Courtyards Odessa who all so lovingly cared for him.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM, June 21, 2025, with services to follow at 1:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home in Odessa, Texas.
