Russell James Lindstedt II, aged 79, passed away on Friday, October 17, 2025.
Born on June 12, 1946, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Russell was the beloved eldest son of Russell James Lindstedt I and Alice Lindstedt. He attended Don Bosco High School and went on to fulfill his childhood ambition by graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1968.
Russell dedicated his life to serving his country. He became a commissioned officer in June 1968 and retired in July 1992. Among his most notable achievements were his tour in Vietnam and his command as Captain of the USS Comte De Grasse (DD-974) in Norfolk, Virginia. His military decorations include the Bronze Star (Combat V and Gold Star), Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star, Combat Action Ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star, along with various unit commendations, service, and campaign medals. Russell shared a special relationship with his dad who also served his country in WWII as a navigator in the United States Air Corps.
After his distinguished military career, Russell worked as an accountant, with roles at Leitch, KPMG, and Newport News Social Services. He was an avid reader of espionage and military novels, a passionate fan of NFL football and the USNA Midshipmen, and enjoyed working with advanced Excel spreadsheets. The Army-Navy game was always a highlight in the Lindstedt household.
Russell's quick-witted humor and love for life touched everyone around him. He was known for bringing smiles to gatherings and work alike, and for his culinary creativity-his Stroganoff, Chunky Beef Stew, BBQ Chicken, and Lindstedt nachos were family favorites.
Russell is preceded in death by his mother; father; and brothers, Gary and Scott. He is survived by his ex-wife Mary Lindstedt; step-son, Jeffrey Ellison; step-daughter, Jennifer Arrendale; and her son, Evan; son, David Lindstedt; and his daughters, Regan, Sidney, and Quinn; brothers, Donald and Robert Lindstedt; and sister, Christine Jarvis.
Funeral service and burial pending at Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements coordinated by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United States Naval Academy Foundation (USNA.com) or The Empowerment Neurofitness and Wellness Center in Virginia Beach (enfwc.org).
Russell will be remembered for his devotion to family, country, and the joy he brought to all who knew him.
