Ruth Naomi Adam, 85, of Reading, passed away on Friday, December 12, 2025, in the care of Reading Hospital. She was the loving widow of the Rev. James W. Adam, who passed away on October 17, 2011.
Born in Reading to the late Andrew C. and Helen V. (Fisher) Horning, Ruth graduated from Governor Mifflin High School in 1958. She graduated from Coatsville Hospital School of Nursing in 1961.
For 19 years, Ruth worked as a registered nurse at Coatsville Hospital and served as a cardiac nurse in the ICU as well as a nighttime nursing supervisor; upon her marriage to James, she transitioned from hospital work to industrial nursing and worked at various intervals for Graterford Prison, Pennsylvania Electric, Bollman's Hat Factory, and Day-Timers.
She was a member of Maidencreek Church of Blandon. Her faith and church community were very important to her. Ruth attended many churches alongside her husband's ministry.
She thoroughly enjoyed time spent at her husband's family home at Avalon, NJ. She and Jim enjoyed traveling, especially on cruises. Ruth loved being an aunt and treasured time spent with her nieces and nephews.
Left to treasure Ruth's memory are her sisters, Jean R. Sweigart, widow of Richard, of Wyomissing, and Wendy L. Earley, widow of Glenn, of Shillington; sister-in-law, M. Jean Schultz of Sicklerville, NJ; and her nieces and nephews: Adam Schultz, Donna Garcia, and Rachel Maygar; Rebecca Schafer and Matthew Sweigart; and Andrew and Isaac Earley.
In addition to her beloved husband, and her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her older sister, Andrea Lee Horning.
