Samuel Joseph Scalzi, Jr., known affectionately as Sam, passed away on July 22, 2024, after a courageous battle against Alzheimer's and cancer. Born in Baltimore, MD, on April 11, 1947, Sam's journey through life was characterized by devotion to his family, service to his country, and a passion for education and community involvement.
Sam is survived by his loving wife for 49 years, Edwina R (Shively) Scalzi; daughters Steffanie R. Gareiss and her husband Brian of DE, and Dottie S. Sauers and her husband Rich of MD; brother Frank Scalzi and his wife Ann of OH; sister Cheryl Fox and her husband Bill of WV; grandchildren Jacob and Mackenzie Sauers, and Fallon Gareiss; niece Francesca Scalzi; nephew Geoffry Fox. He was predeceased by his parents, Samuel J. Scalzi Sr. and Agnes I. (Sheridan) Scalzi.
A proud 1965 graduate of Sparrows Point High School and a 1969 Towson State College alumnus with a Masters degree plus 30 credits, Sam's commitment to lifelong learning was evident. He served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1973 to 1976, further demonstrating his dedication to service. Sam then embarked on a notable career as a guidance counselor at Severna Park High School, from 1978 to 2005, where he touched the lives of countless students and educators.
Known for his love of travel and spending quality time with those he held dear, Sam also enjoyed collecting model cars and was the proud founder of the Miata Owners on Delmarva (M.O.O.D.) Club. These passions provided joy and a spirited sense of community throughout his life.
Sam passed away peacefully in Seaford, DE, leaving behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and a zest for life that will be deeply cherished and remembered by all who knew him. His warm presence and generous spirit will be greatly missed, but the impact of his life's work will continue to resonate within the community and his beloved family for generations to come.
