Sandra Lee "Sandy" Newell, age 84 of Reading, passed away on Friday, October 24, 2025. She was born in Hillsdale to Lloyd and Fern (Mulligan) Bowman on October 20, 1941. She married James "Jim" Newell on March 12, 1960, and he preceded her in death on January 19, 2025.
Sandy graduated from Reading High School class of 1959 and went on to study at the International Business College, beginning her career as a secretary. After years of dedicated studies, she then earned her bachelor's degree from Eastern Michigan University and achieved her Master's degree from Tri-State University in Angola. Sandy spent most of her career in education, beginning as a teacher for Jonesville schools. She then was a teacher and later a counselor in Quincy Schools until her retirement. When she wasn't working, Sandy loved flower gardening, farming, camping, rescuing animals, cross stitching, and ceramics. She loved her friends and family fiercely and enjoyed traveling, and spending time making her lake house, a home.
Survivors include two children, Patti (Marty) Newell Hampton, and Ron Newell; five grandchildren, Emily, Foster, and Austin Hampton, and Mitchell and Nicholas Wert; siblings, Ken (Janet) Bowman and Elaine (Rick) Wetterlind; niece, Randi Lynn (Wetterlind) Smith; and nephews, Randy Bowman, Josh Bowman and Pete Snyder.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, James Newell; her parents; her mother and father-in-law, Wade and Naomi Newell; brother, Randy Bowman; and two nieces, Jenny Bowman and Robin (Wetterlind) Bergquist.
Graveside services for both Jim and Sandy Newell will be held in the summer of 2026 at the Maplewood Cemetery in Reading.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Henry Ford Hospice Home in Jackson. Arrangements are entrusted to Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel in Reading.
