On Friday, May 9, 2025, Scheri (Stanton) Newbry, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away at the age of 79.
Scheri was born on June 26, 1945, in Yakima, Washington, to Robert and Leona (Burgess) Stanton. Not long after, the family moved to Kirkland, WA, where Scheri attended elementary school through high school. After graduating in 1963, Sheri attended Central Washington State College, where she received her degree in Elementary Education. Also, while at Central, she met the love of her life, Michael (Mike) Newbry. Scheri decided to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and was baptized by Mike in 1965. Mike then left Washington to serve a mission for the church, and Scheri patiently waited two years for him to return.
After his return, the two resumed dating and were married and sealed in November, 1968, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Mike joined the military and the two then moved to Virginia, where Scheri taught 3rd grade. She was a beloved teacher and enjoyed teaching very much.
In 1972, they were blessed with their first child, Janine Marie, followed in 1975 by Michael Scott and in 1979, their third and final child, Brian Burdick, arrived.
Since Mike was in the military, the family lived in numerous states (Washington, Montana, Texas, Alaska, Hawaii and California). Scheri loved to travel and enjoyed seeing all the different things each state had to offer. She added to her huge magnet collection every time they went somewhere!
Scheri retired from the City of San Bernardino Police Department in 2012 after 20 years of dedicated service. While with the PD, she was everyone’s “mom.” Big, burley officers would come to the Records Department during the winter, without a coat on, and she would always lecture them and ask where their coat was.
Scheri was a devout member of her church and had many callings throughout her lifetime. One of her favorite callings after retirement was serving alongside her husband in a Church Service Mission where they served in the Colton Bishop’s Storehouse for over two years.
Scheri was preceded in death by her father (Robert, 1963), her mother (Leona, 1984) and two sisters in 2010 (Barbara and Leslie). She is survived by her very loving husband Mike, daughter Janine, sons Scott and Brian (wife Marina), three grandsons (Tanner (wife Emily), Joey and Sam) and recently arrived great-granddaughter, Maddie. Scheri was the best wife, mother and grandmother. She selflessly gave all she could at any time to her family. She loved her family with all her heart, and she will be missed by all – very, very much.
Services in her honor will be held Saturday, May 31st at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 12776 6th Street, Yucaipa, CA. Viewing will be at 11:30 am, and services will start at 12:30 pm.
