Sherry Ann Barton Baker, age 71, of Armuchee, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
Sherry was born in
Smyrna, Georgia, on February 17, 1954, daughter of the late Harold "Judge" Barton and Frances Kerns Barton. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Edward "Ed" Baker; her brother, Ron Barton; and her brother-in-law, David Proctor. Sherry was a 1972 graduate of Armuchee High School and retired from M&S Logistics as a dispatcher. She was a cosmetologist in the 1980s and continued to serve others by cutting hair until her health no longer allowed her to do so. She was a member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church. Sherry loved her family, friends, church and church family, her community, and taking care of people. She was known by those who adored her as someone who would give the shirt off her back if she thought it might help another soul. To know her was to love her, and most people did almost immediately.
Sherry brought warmth, humor, and a whole lot of personality to everything she did. She was equal parts sweet and spicy -- never boring --and always fun to be around. Her smile lit up every room she entered, and if she loved you, you knew it. She delighted in lavishing affection on friends, family, and pets alike. She was known for her "Sherry-isms," her unique way of naming or explaining things, which sometimes took a minute to understand if you didn't know her well.
Being "Mimi" was one of the greatest joys of Sherry's life. Her grandsons, Aaron and Abel Cole, were the two greatest loves of her life. She delighted in every second she spent with them and often seemed like a kid right alongside them -- laughing, playing, and soaking up every moment.
There are simply no words to adequately describe how deeply Sherry was loved and cherished by all who knew her. Her light was the sort that truly lifted others' spirits. Our hearts grieve her absence, but we find comfort in knowing she is now at peace in her heavenly home, reunited with loved ones, and free to rest after a battle with MDS, a stem cell transplant, and Alzheimer's -- preceded by a life so generously lived. Sherry was "tough as nails" and never even considered giving up on anything life threw her way. Her can-do attitude got her through all of life's many challenges with fortitude and grace. By God's grace, now she can just rest.
Survivors include her daughter, Candace Cole (Shaun); grandsons, Aaron and Abel Cole; brother, Jim Barton; sisters-in-law, Theresa Barton and Evelyn Proctor; nieces and nephews, whom she loved as her own, Kristen Barton Wagner (Robin), Keri Barton Burkett (Linc), Jamie Barton, and Tyler Barton (Laura); also special lifelong friends, Patricia Jean Chastain and Angie Southerland Chastain; and the father of her daughter, Richard Ward. Many cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews, and close extended family also survive.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel, on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., and on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, with Rev. Wayne Hopper officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, a charity close to your hearts, or "pay it forward" by helping another person, just the way Sherry would have wanted.
The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to the people of Homespun Hospice, especially Robin and Holly, and the members of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, the Everett Springs and "Pocket" communities, all of whom were so loving and supportive through Sherry's transitional journey.
