Sherry Morrow Sheilds

Sherry Morrow Shields of Candler, NC passed from this world on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at the age of 77. Born April 8, 1947 in Asheville, NC to the late Margaret Nelson and the late Paul Morrow, she lived the majority of her life in Buncombe County.
After graduation from Lee Edwards High School in 1965, she attended Central Piedmont Community College to become a Registered Dental Hygienist. She then attended UNC - Chapel Hill as the first student accepted as a community college transfer into their Bachelor of Science program in Dental Hygiene. In 1969, she married Newton Donald Shields who she joined in Guam where he served in the US Navy. She worked as a dental hygienist in Guam and Asheville until 1973 when she was hired by Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College as a dental hygiene instructor. She continued in that role until 2007 when she became the Interim Dean of Allied Health. She retired in 2008. Sherry actively participated as a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church holding many leadership roles.
In addition to her parents, her stepfather, David Harrison, her sister, Paula Morrow, and granddaughter, Mattie Shields, preceded her in death. She leaves behind her husband of 56 years, Newton, her children and their spouses, Heather Shields of Franklin, Angela Shields Langford (Mike) of Candler, son Wes Shields (Laura) of Vero Beach, FL. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Maya and Leigh Langford and Emma, Cody, and Tucker Shields. Also, surviving are her half sisters Cynthia Gorski and Nancy Pawelczyk, extended family members and cherished friends.
The family would like to thank Memory Care's staff, DayStay's staff, and her in home caregivers, especially Peggy Lackey, for the support and compassion given to Sherry and her family during the progression of her disease. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Asheville and DayStay Adult Day Care at Hominy Baptist Church.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 5, 2025 at 2:00 at St. Luke's Espicopal Church; 219 Chunns Cove Road, Asheville. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service in lieu of a visitation.
