Shirley Dean Casey, 80, of Dewey, died Thursday in Tulsa. She was a sweet soul who loved her family, friends and community, and will be dearly missed.
Shirley was born the daughter of Marion Francis and Etta Lee (Griggs) Goins on December 30, 1943, in Indianapolis, Indiana. The family lived in Nowata, Okla., during her grade school years, and then in Westville, Okla., where she graduated from Westville High School in 1962.
Growing up, Shirley loved animals and had her own horse. She enjoyed playing school sports and watching her favorite teams, especially the "OU" football teams of which she was a big time fan. While working in Bartlesville at a donut shop, she met a coworker and quickly fell in love with William Lee Casey. They united in marriage on July 5, 1963, and made their home north of Dewey on 1300 Rd., "Cemetery Road", for the past 50 years. Shirley was well known as a meat wrapper for many years at local grocery stores. For the past 35 years she co-owned with William B&C Fireworks, operating several stands in our community. She was able to travel to forty-nine (49) states with her husband when he was driving a semi-truck. Though she enjoyed them all she always said she loved Oklahoma the best. They enjoyed 53 years of loving marriage before he preceded her in death in 2016.
Shirley had many passions in life and we will name just a few of them, starting with her and William's shared love for the local community and children. Together they sponsored several teams yearly with the Dewey Recreation Association. Every player on each team they sponsored received a fireworks kiddie pack, to help them celebrate July 4th. In her free time, Shirley also enjoyed taking care of her home and her flower beds, she often noticed people driving by slowing down to see her beautiful flowers. She loved feeding the birds and would spend hours watching them. A constant loving companion was her dog, "Little Britches". Shirley was always smiling and loved to talk. Those who knew her knew they better sit down if they were on a phone call with her as the call would last a minimum of an hour and mostly likely longer. Shirley was a very smart lady whose favorite TV game show was Jeopardy. She loved working crypto – puzzles and crosswords.
Cooking was Shirley's love language in action. She was concerned about everyone around her and made sure everyone had plenty to eat. She could always be counted on to cook for special occasions and funeral dinners whenever needed. Growing up Shonda remembers her Momma was mom to all of their friends, cooking for them and feeding them whenever they were over at the house. Shirley's pride and joy was her only grandchild Cody, and then his son Cody River has been dear to her heart. She loved her son-in-law, Zanford who she always greeted with "Hello, Mr. Ogans"! She knew she could count on Zanford anytime she needed someone to help her. Every time he was at her house she knew he was going to take out the trash. Shirley will be remembered for her love for others.
Shirley is survived by her daughter Shonda Lea (Zanford) Ogans; siblings: Sharon Sue (Ted) Caviness, Shelah Veach (Rick Blevins), Sherma "Jackie" Leach, Jesse "J.J." Morrison, Bobby (Anna) Morrison and Shasta Dixon Sanders; grandson Cody (Casey Lucy) Coke; and great grandson Cody River (mom, Christi McDonald) Coke. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, William "Bill" Casey; two sons Michael "Mike" Lee Casey and Timothy "Tim" Lee Casey; and brother Jim Goins.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10-8 and Thursday 10-1, at the Davis Family Funeral Home - Dewey Chapel.
