Shirley Hooks

Shirley Ann Anderson Hooks, 80, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on January 14, 2024. Born in Houston, Texas, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Shirley's zest for life was evident from the start. A graduate of Spring Branch Senior High School in 1961, she furthered her education at Texas Tech University and pursued real estate studies in Colorado and Texas.
Shirley launched her career in real estate when she moved to Granbury, Texas, in 1973 with her daughters, Kathy and Emily. Her professional journey was marked by dedication and excellence, culminating in a lifelong vocation in real estate that she cherished deeply.
In 1985, Shirley married the love of her life, Bill Hooks. Their union added a third daughter, Tami, to the family tree. In 1995, Shirley opened the local Century 21 office. She and Bill restored the Historic Masonic Lodge building on the Historic Town Square.
Shirley's professional life was woven into the fabric of the community. In addition to serving as Past State Director at Granbury Association of Realtors, she was honored by the local real estate board as Realtor of the Year in 1993 and 1996, and Citizen of the Year in 1999. Shirley also acted as Past President at the Dallas/Fort Worth Century 21 Broker's Council. She received countless honors and awards through her career with Century 21 and other professional organizations.
Shirley's civic leadership was extensive, including recent leadership roles at the Granbury Rotary Club and Ruth's Place. Throughout the years, she also served on the Granbury Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors, the Lake Granbury Medical Center Board and many others. Shirley co-founded the local Relay for Life and the Hood and Somervell Counties Children's Advocacy Center. She was a charter member with Leadership Granbury. Most notably, she co-founded Mission Granbury twenty-five years ago and served as its inaugural President.
Shirley's interests reflected her unwavering passion for life. Most recently retaking piano lessons on a piano she found decades earlier and personally refurbished into a beautiful musical instrument. A lover of games and family, Shirley was either beating everyone at Skip-bo, backgammon, Chickenfoot, cards, or dominos, or planning the next big adventure. Forever ready for the next escapade, Shirley and Bill enjoyed many road trips with her sister and brother-in-law, Joyce & Wayne. She and her daughters, Kathy and Emily went on a train trip to the Grand Canyon just a few months ago. She was already planning on a riverboat cruise with her family for next fall.
Shirley's legacy is one of service, resilience, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to living life to the fullest. Her infectious, heartfelt laughter–distinctive and contagious–echoed wherever she went. As we say goodbye to this remarkable woman, we take comfort in the indelible mark she has left on our hearts and the community of Granbury.
Shirley was preceded in death by her spouse, Billy Hooks and her parents, Hays Chronister Anderson and Mary Walden Jones.
Survived by her daughters Katherine Kauffman (Nina), Emily Hooks, and Tami Rasmussen (David), along with grandchildren Zachary Hooks, Kasey Gruener (Eric), Hayley Kauffman, and great-granddaughter Ada Gruener and one more on the way. Shirley is also survived by her sisters Joyce Navarro (Wayne), Charla Anderson, Marsha Hutsell. Finally she is survived by Nina's children, Jackson, Allyson, and Emily Strenk, brother-in-law, Dennis Hooks (Laura), numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, a multitude of friends, and the entire community of Granbury, Texas, which she loved so dearly.
A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 20, 2024 at First Christian Church of Granbury with burial to follow at Holly Hills Memorial Park. Shirley will lie in state on Friday, January 19, 2024 from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at the funeral home. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM -7:00 PM, Friday, January 19, 2024 at Wiley Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Mission Granbury or Ruth's Place reflecting Shirley's lifelong commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others. May her memory be a source of strength and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
