Houston-Shirley Ruth Porter Jennings, 74, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at NMMC Baldwyn Nursing Facility. She was born on September 7, 1949 in Cleveland, MS to Robert Louie Porter and Lou Dean Farr Porter. She was a member of Amity Baptist Church in Sparta, MS Shirley lived most of her life in Houston and graduated from Houston High School, Class of 1970. She attended nursing school at Houston Hospital under the leadership of Dr. Dyer. She worked many years as an LPN at Floy Dyer Nursing Home until her retirement. She was a talented artist that loved to paint and draw. She also enjoyed writing poetry, listening to music and reading the Bible, which she did daily. She often could be seen sitting on her porch reading. Shirley was kindhearted and saw the best in everyone. Most of all, she deeply loved her family and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 1:00 at Southern Funeral Home. Brother Scott Griffin will be officiating. Burial will follow in Amity Cemetery in Sparta. Visitation will be on Saturday, August 17 from 11:00 until service time at 1:00 at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers will be Eric Montgomery, Justin Eaton, Michael Bennett, Steve Porter, and Adam Bass. Honorary pallbearers are Charlie Van Porter and Michael Conn.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory; her son, David Joseph Jennings of Houston; her brother, Robert L. Porter (Sandra) of Tupelo; her sister, Linda Bennett (Michael) of Columbia, MS; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lou Dean Porter; her husband, Joseph Jennings; and her sisters, Shirlene Porter and Ginny Ann Bass.
