The loss of Shirley C. Kiger, on October 1, 2025, was a loss of a loving, caring, and wonderful spouse, mother, and friend to all she met.
Shirley was born on March 17, 1935, to Hubert J. and Rae Beach Coker in Columbia, SC. She attended grade school there, and later Dreher High School, attending 3 years and moving on to the University of South Carolina for 3 years before transferring to Peabody Teachers College in Nashville, TN. Shirley married Robert G. Kiger just before he was to be enrolled in Vanderbilt Medical School at the same time. After graduation, and Bob's completion at Vanderbilt, they moved to Augusta, GA. Soon Shirley gave birth to their 2 boys, Robert Christopher (Chris), and Mark Ryan Kiger. She loved her 3 grandchildren, Cameron, Kyle, and Eden. She loved and enjoyed being a part of the DAR, the Camden Book Club, the Camden Garden Club, and the Springdale Hall Club. Shirley was an avid reader of history novels.
Shirley's faith as a Christian was her modus operandi for life, and was the reason she loved, and how she was able to endure 4 years of pain from a collapsed vertebrae that left her with a crooked spine. Her final days were at Providence Hospital in Columbia, SC, with the comfort of family and love, as Bob wished for her in death. His sweet girl. God is waiting with open arms to greet you. Shirley will be waiting patiently until we meet again at the pearly gates.
