Houghton
Shuanglin Zhang passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025, at his home in Houghton, Michigan, due to complications from ALS. He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Ying, his son, Bo, as well as his three sisters and one brother.
Born in a rural village in China as the fourth of five children, Shuanglin showed early academic promise, entering university at the age of 16. He went on to earn both his Master's and PhD degrees in Statistics. A lifelong scholar, Shuanglin held teaching positions at universities across China, Hungary, and the United States. He was a respected researcher who collaborated internationally, contributing significantly to his field. It was during his graduate studies in Changchun, China, that he met his beloved wife, Ying.
In 1999, Shuanglin advanced his research at Yale University, relocating his family from China to the United States. In 2003, he accepted a professorship at Michigan Technological University, where he embraced life in the Upper Peninsula and became a cherished member of the community.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Shuanglin was passionate about the outdoors. He enjoyed swimming, hiking, fishing, and kayaking, and was an avid athlete who loved playing basketball and volleyball.
In 2005, Shuanglin was diagnosed with ALS. Defying expectations, he lived with the disease for 20 years. Throughout his illness, he continued to conduct research and mentor graduate students until 2023, supported by the unwavering care of his wife, doctors and nurses, and dedicated students.
A celebration of Shuanglin's life will be held on Saturday, October 11th, from 2 to 5 pm at the Memorial Chapel in Hancock, with a presentation at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the ALS Association: https://www.als.org/ways-give.
