Sonja M. Belling, age 71, of Tomahawk, WI, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2024, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau, WI, after a hard-fought battle with cancer surrounded by her family. Sonja was born in Rhinelander, WI, on December 30, 1952, to the late Kenneth and Cornelia (Zwaard) Smith. She was married to David Belling in 2000; he passed away on June 20, 2024.
Sonja was a 1970 graduate of the Rhinelander High School. She entered the workforce while lovingly raising her children. Sonja was employed at the PCA Tomahawk Mill, retiring after over 35 years of employment. She loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, and 4-wheeling. Travel was a big part of her life. More recently, she enjoyed working on puzzles and crosswords. Above all, Sonja adored spending time with her family and her dogs throughout the years.
Survivors include her sons, Bill (Jessica) Verhasselt, of Howard, WI, and Bob (Mindy) Verhasselt, of Weston, WI; her daughter, Shannon (Jason) Duginski, of Merrill, WI; her sister-in-law, Darlene Smith, of Gleason, WI; her sisters, Sandy (Cook) Schoenick, of Rhinelander, WI, Suzie Costa, of Madison, WI, Sally (Jerry) Gilliard, of Merrill, WI, Freddie (Larry) Thompson, of Eagle River, WI, and Cindy (Keith) Packard, of Deerbrook, WI; her grandchildren, Kristi, Kyle, Caden, Kralen, Kyan, Kinzley, Calen, and Kensi, in addition to her great-granddaughter, Brynlee. She is further survived by her Yellow Lab, Kalli Kay. Sonja was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Cora; her husband, Dave; and her brother, Bill Smith.
A celebration of life gathering will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the Lincoln County Sports Club in Merrill beginning at 2:00 PM. Generations Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family.
