October 31, 1962 – September 3, 2025
Sophia Lane Marks, 62, of Morehead City, NC, passed away on September 3, 2025.
Born on October 31, 1962, Sophia lived a life full of courage, adventure, and love. She had an
untamable spirit and followed her passions wherever they led. From the rolling hills of California,
where she spent most of her adult life, to the mountains of Asheville, and finally back to the
Carolina coast she called home, Sophia always found beauty in the journey.
She was passionate about horses and happiest in the saddle, connected to the rhythm of the
ride. Her dogs were her faithful companions, constant sources of joy and comfort. For 50 years,
her dearest friend, Patrina, was by her side, a bond that began when they were just twelve
years old.
Sophia leaves behind her loving mother, Christobel Marks of Morehead City; her brother, Bobby
Marks (Barbara) of Newport; her two nieces, Emily Golightly (Jim) and Amanda Schutt (Phil);
and her great-nieces and nephew, Maggie, Jude, and Rachel. She was preceded in death by
her father, Jerry Marks.
Sophia’s love of music echoed her free-spirited soul. As Bob Dylan once wrote, “May you stay
forever young.”
Her family and friends will remember her for her adventurous heart, her laughter, her loyalty, and
the way she embraced life on her own terms.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carteret County Humane Society, honoring
Sophia’s lifelong love of animals. A private celebration of life will be held for family at a later
date.
