Stanley G. Mattson

Stanley G. Mattson, 89, of Rockford, passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2022. Born June 16, 1933, in Rockford, the son of Gilbert K. and Alice (Anderson) Mattson. Stan graduated from East High School in 1951 where he was an All- State swimmer, earning a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin. Veteran of the U.S. Marines serving in the Korean War. He continued his service to the Marine Corps by helping raise funds to help build the Korean War Memorial in town. Stan married Donna Rae Nelson on September 12, 1959. She predeceased him on May 25, 2020. He worked for Sundstrand for 37 years, overseeing facilities in Rockford, Ohio, Arizona, Dijon France, and Singapore. Stan was a member of City First Church, Navy Club, LLL and the Rockford Barber Shoppers. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Stan was an avid blood donor. He began donating at the age of 18, donating 30 plus gallons of blood throughout his life.
Survived by his children, Kevin Mattson, and Heidi (Mike) Ognibene; grandchildren, Conrad (Kiley) Ognibene and Hayden (James) Smith; two greatgrandchildren, Addison Ognibene and Baby Smith due in September; sister, Bess Wheeler; nephews, Rocky and Jim Anderson, and Gilbert Wheeler; and brother-in-law, Steven (Linda) Nelson. Also predeceased by his parents.
Memorial Services will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., Rockford. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. prior to the service. Private burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Machesney Park, IL.
