Stephen Barry Verloin DeGruy, 38, passed away at home on May 2, 2025, surrounded by his family and friends. Stephen entered this world on October 20, 1986, the youngest son of Pierre and Denise, and brother of Jacques and Michael. Stephen grew up in Lakeview, where he made lifelong friends, enjoyed the company of neighbors, and created endless memories with family. He graduated from De La Salle High School.
All who met him were enamored with his pure heart and ability to bring joy and laughter wherever he went. Stephen was diagnosed with cancer in 2022 and continued to approach life with eternal optimism and a refusal to accept defeat, just as he approached every challenge he faced. Stephen's spirit, humor, and love will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
Stephen is survived by his parents Pierre Verloin and Denise Maher DeGruy; his brother Jacques (m. Debbie) and his brother Michael (m. Tracy); his nieces and nephews: Isabelle, Logan, Natalie (his goddaughter), Julian, Brigitte, and Séverine; his companion Loriann Storts Anders; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by many loved ones, including his grandfather, James Maher, Jr.; his aunt, Patricia Maher Carter; and his uncle, James Maher, III.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, beginning at 10 AM with a funeral Mass at 12 noon at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street in New Orleans. Interment will follow at Hope Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance in Stephen's name. To sign the guestbook, visit www.schoenfh.com.
