Stephen Grolnic died peacefully on July 24, 2025 at the age of 81. Stephen lived in Randolph MA for over 50 years.
Stephen was born in Boston to the late Abraham and Ann (Yashinsky) Grolnic on December 28, 1943. He was educated by the Boston Public Schools and graduated from English High School in 1963.
Stephen was very active in the Boy Scouts, the troop from Hyde Park and became a Boy Scout leader later on.
Stephen worked in the electronics field for 8 years before going back to school. He went to Stonehill College at night for 2 years and received his associate's degree in June 1973. He then went on to UMass Amherst and got his bachelor's degree in communication disorders in 1976. He furthered his education at Illinois State University, and earned a Masters degree in Audiology in May 1979.
In December 1979 he opened 2 hearing aid offices in both Framingham and Taunton. His passion was working with the public with hearing difficulties. He saw clients in his office, in nursing homes, in hospitals, in rest homes, in group homes, and in their own homes.
Many years later when he was around 58 years old, Stephen went back to college to earn his Doctorate of Audiology from the University of Florida, in May 2002.
Stephen's hobbies were maintaining his salt-water fish tank, collection of glass flowers, vases, and other kinds of glass works. He had a great interest in Egyptian art. He and Irene bought a papyrus while in Cairo, and he did a deep dive into the papyrus. He wrote his paper on this piece of Egyptian art for many years. His philosophy was, the more research I do, I always find something new about the papyrus. The papyrus was about the difference between innocence and guilt. The person's charges were put on apothecary scale. The apothecary scale was depicted in the Book of the Dead, where the person's heart was weighed against the feather of truth. The apothecary scale was the symbol between innocence and guilt where the heart, and the feather were placed on opposite scale pans. If one was guilty or sinful, the soul's heart would weigh more than the feather. If the person was innocent or truthful, the heart would weigh less than the feather.
He loved to watch old western movies and was a great New England Patriots fan. He never missed a game. Stephen and Irene did some travelling in recent years. They took tours of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Canadian Rockies, Northern California, Washington State, Alaska, United Kingdom, took a Viking cruise down the Danube River in Germany, Austria, and Poland. They also took tours of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Italy.
Stephen also went to art shows in Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine. He also enjoyed going to glass blowing studios. He would volunteer at Gillette Stadium concession stands frequently when the Patriots played at home.
He and Irene met at a Bnai Brith party in Andover in 1982. He laid eyes on her, and on the third date he asked Irene to marry him. She said yes and they dated for a year to get to know each other, until he said Irene was the woman for him. They married on June 26, 1983 and just celebrated 42 years of marriage.
He is survived by his loving wife, Irene J. Grolnic, his brother Jerrold Grolnic of Weymouth, MA, many other relatives, and dear friends George & Harriet Goldstein of Quincy, MA, Sal Pace of Lexington, MA, John & Judy Friedman of Natick, MA and many other friends.
