Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home - FreeportStephen Eugene Marks "Steve" passed away on July 20th, 2025 in Mesa, Arizona at the age of 76. He was born on April 6, 1949, to Eugene and Jean (Koller). He graduated from Freeport High School in 1967. Steve received his Bachelor of Science in physical education from Southern Illinois University in 1973. He continued his education at Southern Illinois receiving his Masters Degree in education in 1974.
Steve was married to his wife, Catherine for 55 years. Upon their graduation from college in 1974, they moved to Arizona where they shared their life together. they welcomed their daughter Elizabeth Marie in 1981. Steve taught Physical Education and weight training as well as coaching football and wrestling at Poston Jr. High for 27 years.
Steve loved all sports. He was lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears, later becoming a fan of the Phoenix Suns and Diamondbacks. He liked traveling and enjoying many road trips with his wife, Catherine. He was an enthusiastic golfer and loved nature and listening to his favorite music. His daughter, Elizabeth, and granddaughter, Avena, were the light of his life.
Steve was known for his sense of humor, optimistic outlook, and infectious laugh. He had numerous family, friends, and students that he left a positive impact on.
Steve is survived by his wife, Catherine; daughter, Elizabeth Marks; granddaughter, Avena Marks; sisters, Marcia (Jeff) Goro, Pam Marks (Mark Peele), Carrie Marks, Pat (Chris) Schneider, and sister-in-law, Michelle Yeager.
There will be a Celebration of Life held at Mariposa Gardens, 6747 E. Broadway Rd. Mesa, AZ 85206, on November 8, 2025 at 1pm.
