Stephen Moore Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Nichols Funeral Home - Wilmington on Feb. 12, 2026.
Stephen M. Moore, "Morty," age 63, a long-time resident of Malden, passed away unexpectedly on January 27, 2026.

Steve was born on November 13, 1962, in Woburn, MA. He was the cherished son of the late Thomas and Joan (Welch) Moore. Steve was raised in Medford and was a graduate of Medford High School.

Steve honorably served his country with great pride and dedication. He enlisted in the United States Navy on December 19, 1985, where he worked as an aviation electronics technician, specializing in helicopter maintenance. During his service, he also served as a rescue swimmer and earned several awards and commendations, including a medal for his deployment in Southwest Asia. He was honorably discharged on December 31, 1992. A true patriot, Steve later reenlisted during the Iraq conflict, continuing his military service with the New Hampshire Army National Guard in the Medivac unit, where he served for several years before retiring.

Following his military service, Steve began a distinguished career with the Medford Fire Department on April 2, 1995. Firefighting was more than a job-it was his calling. Steve was deeply committed to serving the residents of Medford and was equally devoted to his fellow firefighters. As a member of the training squad, he took great pride in teaching new firefighters critical, life-saving skills and mentoring them as they began their careers. In recognition of his dedication, leadership, and selflessness, Steve was promoted to Lieutenant on May 31, 2020. He continued to serve with honor until his well-earned retirement on April 2, 2023.

On November 23, 2007, Steve married his best friend and the love of his life, Judy. Together, they built a joyful life centered around their large and loving family of six children. Steve was a devoted and involved father who could always be found cheering from the sidelines at countless sports games and attending school events. He especially treasured time spent with family during the holidays, enjoying music, laughter, and spirited family card games.

In his free time, Steve loved traveling with Judy. While they explored many places together, their favorite destination was St. Lucia, where they delighted in the warm weather and beautiful beaches. Steve and Judy always looked forward to sharing stories from their adventures with family and friends.

Steve will be fondly remembered for his great sense of humor and infectious laughter. He embraced life fully and lived it with purpose, love, and joy. His unwavering dedication to his country, his profession, and, above all, his family defined who he was. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Steve was the beloved husband of Judith A. (Hurley) Moore; the loving father of Shawn M. Moore and Patrick T. Moore; the devoted stepfather of Gregory T. Hussey and his wife Mikaela, Shannon P. Stefano and her husband Jason, Cullen T. Hussey and his wife Shayla, and Brendan Hussey; and the adoring "Pa" of Lucy Judith Stefano, lovingly known as "Goose."

He was the dear brother of Kathleen and Gregory Arikian, Maureen Chasson and Bob, Thomas Moore, Anne and Brett St. Germain, and Theresa Moore. Steve was the cherished son-in-law of Ona-Claire Hurley and brother-in-law of Maryann and Kevin Barry, Walter Hurley II, Jeff and Tracy Hurley, and Christopher Hurley. He was also the proud and "favorite uncle" to many loving nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a Funeral Mass at St. Raphael's Church, 514 High Street, Medford, MA, on Friday, February 27th, at 11:00 a.m. Following the Funeral Mass, all are welcome to attend a celebration of Steve's life at the Medford/Malden Lodge of Elks, 19 Washington Street, Medford.

Memorial donations in Steve's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
