Stephen James "Steve" Yunker

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Stephen "Steve" James Yunker on Sunday, December 14, 2025, in Sylva, North Carolina. During this blessed Christmas season, we give thanks for the 66 years of his life and what he has meant to his family and friends.

Born on February 22, 1959, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, Steve lived a life defined by service, dedication to family, and a deep connection to the natural world.

Steve served his country with honor in the United States Navy as an Aviation Electrician's Mate (AEAN). He enlisted on July 21, 1978, and served on active duty until July 29, 1982. His commitment continued in the Naval Reserves until July 20, 1984. His military service reflected both his technical skill and his steadfast sense of duty. After completing his time in the Navy, Steve pursued his entrepreneurial ambitions by taking over Quality Water Treatment, previously his fathers business in Leesburg, Florida. Through this business venture, he became a trusted figure in his community-valued for his integrity and dedication to providing essential services. A man of Christian faith, Steve found peace and fulfillment in nature. Whether working with his hands or spending time outdoors with his children and animals, he felt most at home under open skies. His love for animals, building, and the natural world was a defining part of who he was. Steve's greatest pride was his family.

He was preceded in death by his father, James C. Yunker; sister Pamela "Pam" Howard Hodges; and mother-in-law Dolly Yunker.

He is lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Larissa Stephanie Yunker-Dunson and Elisabeth (Liz) Ashley Yunker; his son, David James Yunker; and his son-in-law, Aaron David Dunson and sole granddaughter, Helyn Rose Dunson. He also leaves behind his loving mother of 94 years, Donna Joan Miller Yunker; sister Deborah "Deb" Sines Yunker and brother-in-law Richard "Rick" Sines; nieces Ericka Sines Overchuck and Jessica Sines; and nephew Jon Hodges.

Steve's legacy endures through those who knew him-his family, friends, fellow veterans, customers, and all who shared moments with him in nature or beside a loyal animal companion. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a lasting reminder of a life lived with purpose and heart.
