Steven J. Burkhart, 74, of Williamsport, passed away Aug. 1, 2025, at Rose View Nursing Home. He was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in February of this year.
Steve was born in Williamsport on July 3, 1951, a son of the late John T. and Mary L. (Lutz) Burkhart.
He was a member of St. Joseph The Worker Parish and was a 1969, last class to graduate from the former St. Joseph High School.
In 1972, Steve enlisted in the Army for two years, stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. He earned two associate degrees from the former Williamsport Area Community College, and was also a graduate of Lycoming College.
Steve worked at the former Williamsport Hospital for 21 years. He also worked at Brodart Co. and finally retired from Shop-Vac Corp.
Steve was such a friendly, happy-go-lucky person, who embraced life to the fullest. He was a health and exercise fanatic, who fully enjoyed the River Walk for several miles every day. Back in the day, he would faithfully knock out 3,000 sit-ups a day. That is just staggering. He was also a voracious speed reader. Who else would read every volume of "History of the World." Come on!
Steve also became quite proficient at shooting billiards. During his high school days, you could find him on many afternoons, planning his next shot in the dingy, smoke-filled back room of Mauroás pool hall.
Steve was also no stranger to gambling. His countless bus trips to Atlantic City were certainly proof of that. He was also a wholehearted fan of the Eagles and Phillies. You can be assured that most conversations with Steve ended up in Philadelphia.
Surviving are a brother, Keith (Kerri) Burkhart of Montoursville; and two sisters, Karen Burkhart of Denver, Colorado, and Lynn Burkhart of Williamsport. Also, two nieces, two nephews, four great-nieces and four great-nephews.
The family will greet family and friends in the rear of the church from 9 to 9:45 a.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Mon., Aug. 11, 2025, at St. Joseph The Worker Parish, 702 W. Fourth St., Williamsport, with the Rev. David W Bechtel officiating.
