Steven Wayne McGinnis, age 69, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully in his home on January 3, 2025. He was born on April 13, 1955, in Des Moines to Wayne and Doris McGinnis.
A proud graduate of Southeast Polk High School in 1973, Steve lived a life full of adventure, family, and friendship. He was known for his warm heart, infectious smile, and his ability to make everyone feel like they were important. Steve had a love for the outdoors, particularly skiing and fishing, and cherished spending time with his family and friends. He was a person who could always be counted on, and his loyalty and kindness touched the lives of all who knew him.
For most of his life, Steve worked as a truck driver, a job that allowed him to travel and meet new people. But no matter where the road took him, he always kept his loved ones close in his heart. Steve's dog, Samson, was a beloved companion and a constant source of joy in his life.
In the final year of his life, Steve faced a courageous battle with cancer. Throughout his treatment, Steve remained hopeful and resilient, and in a moment of great triumph, he was overjoyed to ring the bell after completing his treatments-a symbol of victory that brought him immeasurable joy.
Steve is survived by his son, Nicholas; daughter, Stacy (Matthew) Britt; grandchildren, Dalton Erskin, Jacob Britt, Anissa Erskin, and Lilith Britt; and his siblings, Kathy (Steve) Huffman, Carol Benjamin, and Danny McGinnis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Doris McGinnis; his grandson, Nicholas McGinnis Jr.; and his siblings, Nancy Thomas and Mike McGinnis, as well as three nephews: Mikey McGinnis, James Thomas, and Teddy McGinnis.
Steve's family and friends will always remember him for his strength, kindness, and the love he so freely gave. His presence will be missed deeply, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those he left behind.
A celebration of Steve's life will be held Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Merle Hay Chapel, 4400 Merle Hay Rd, Des Moines, IA 50310.
Rest in peace, Steve. You will forever be loved and remembered.
