Steven R. Morrell, "Robert" "Bob", a beloved music teacher and an extraordinary musician, passed away on November 8, 2024 at Care One in Parsippany. Born on July 6, 1946, in Paterson, New Jersey, Steven dedicated over 40 years of his life to the Montville School District, where he not only taught but also ignited a passion for music in countless students.
Steven's life was defined by music and teaching, a testament to his passion and commitment to his craft and his students. He embraced life fully, creating beautiful melodies that echoed his love for family and community.
In his youth, he was honored to be a New Jersey State and National Champion Accordion Player and even graced the esteemed Lawrence Welk Show, sharing his talents with a wider audience. His musical talent allowed him to quickly learn piano and advance through many years of music school, even continuing his post-graduate education with orchestral conducting at Julliard.
As a trailblazer, he started the music program at Montville High School and nurtured young talents at Robert R. Lazar Middle School. His dedication to teaching and his remarkable ability to inspire helped the school band achieve multiple state championships, showcasing his commitment to excellence in music education. Beyond the classroom, Steven was a gifted conductor and composer whose music resonated across the United States.
Steven was not only esteemed for his musical prowess but also for his profound love for his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Ayako (Matsukawa), and his two sons, Robert and Sean, who were his pride and joy, and whom he often referred to as his proudest accomplishments. He also leaves behind his brother, Timothy.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Robert Morrell and Alida (Shenise). The legacy he leaves behind is one of melody, mentorship, and warmth, and he will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Visitation will be held on November 14, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at The Morrison Etheridge Funeral Home, Inc., located at 86 Bartholdi Ave, Butler, NJ. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM, with burial taking place at Mount Calvary Cemetery at 12:00 PM. Together, let us celebrate the life of this remarkable man who touched so many lives with his passion for music and his unwavering dedication to teaching.
