Suzanne Mishel (Shelton) Obermeyer, age 65, died April 11, 2025 after a long courageous battle with Recurrent Metastatic Breast Cancer.
She was born April 7, 1960 in Arco, Idaho to Daniel A. and Sharon J. Shelton. The family moved to Yakima in 1962, where her sister Sally was born.
"Suzi" graduated from Davis High in 1978 and later from college at Yakima Valley Community College and Central Washington University. She chose a degree in mass media: public relations because it sounded like fun, and she didn't have to take more math or "other hard classes".
In later years, Sue went by Suzanne at work, in part due to there always being another Sue or Susan on duty before she got there. She sampled a variety of careers: journalism, public relations, healthcare, and nonprofits. She had the great fortune to have Fridays off beginning in 2010 until her retirement in July 2024. Sue always seemed to wind up in a writing or communications capacity of some sort. Her personal mission was to use information to equip others.
In 1999, Sue married John Obermeyer. They made a happy home together in Selah enjoying life in the country, improving their fixer upper (aka: The Love Shack, Baby!), going to the beach and their dogs. Best times with friends included BUNCO parties, snowshoeing, events like the Corn Maze, rail riding, the Luminaria Walk, hiking and other travel.
In 2004, Sue made a public declaration of her faith in Jesus Christ, getting baptized in Sarg Hubbard Pond at the Yakima Greenway by Yakima Foursquare Church.
She was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer in the lungs in 2021, 19 years after her initial treatment. She received excellent care for the cancer as a "chronic illness" at City of Hope in Phoenix, Arizona and later North Star Lodge in Yakima, Washington.
Sue is survived by her husband John Obermeyer, sister Sally Shelton (Alan Pridgen), siblings-in-law: Lani Kirschenman, Kurt (Shelley), Mickey (Fran), and Terry (Heather) Obermeyer, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and more friends than you can begin to count.
A Celebration of Life will be held at (TIME-TBD) on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at Yakima Foursquare Church (700 N. 40th Ave, Yakima, WA 98908). In lieu of flowers please consider donations to the Yakima Area Arboretum, Yakima Pet Rescue, Yakima River Greenway or Yakima Humane Society.

I met Suzanne when we both were employed at OIC of Washington in Yakima. We formed a good relationship both as employee and a budding friendship. Suzanne was competent and worked hard to promote OIC and its Mission. We both left OIC but our paths periodically crossed and we had a good time reminiscing. I admired her for her handling of the Cancer diagnosis. She was brave and courageous, never complained and remained her happy self. Rest in peace Suzanne.

My connection with Suzanne was through the nonprofit (Office of Rural and Farmworker Housing) she came to work for after I had retired from there. When our paths crossed, I was always very impressed with her enthusiam, graciousness and competence. I know she touched many lives and will be greatly missed.
