Sydonia Evelyn "Donie" (Nietsche) Schumann, age 92, fell asleep in Jesus and entered everlasting life with God the Holy Trinity on June 12, 2025. She was born in Greens Creek (Lee County), Texas on October 3, 1932, the youngest of nine children born to Paul Bernhard and Selma Hulda (Mittasch) Nietsche. She was born again into God's Kingdom in the waters of Holy Baptism in November 1932 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Greens Creek. She attended school through eighth grade in Indian Creek (Fayette County). She received Confirmation instruction from Rev. Traugott of Zion Lutheran Church in La Grange and confirmed her Christian faith there on April 28, 1946. Her Confirmation verse was 2 Corinthians 12:9, "My grace is sufficient for thee, for my strength is made perfect in weakness." Her favorite passages from Holy Scripture were John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Mark 16:16, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." Revelation 2:10, "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life."
Sydonia was joined in Holy Matrimony to Gilbert Schumann on December 24, 1949, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in La Grange, Texas. Throughout their marriage, they remained faithful members of various Lutheran churches, including Redeemer in Austin, Mt. Calvary in La Grange, and Grace in Elgin. They were blessed with two children, Gene and Kathy. In addition to her work in the home, Sydonia also worked as a key entry operator and purchasing clerk for the Texas Purchasing and General Services Commission for 27 years, being recognized as "Employee of the Month" in 1991. In her spare time, Sydonia enjoyed gardening, cooking, and above all caring for her family.
Sydonia was preceded in death by her parents; by her beloved husband, Gilbert Schumann; her siblings: John Nietsche, Wilhelm Nietsche, Selma Nietsche, Bennie Nietsche, Alma Nietsche, Carl Nietsche, Erwin Nietsche, and Lorine Nietsche.
Sydonia is survived by her son, Gene Schumann of Bastrop, TX; one daughter, Kathy Linder and husband, Kenneth of Bastrop, TX; three grandchildren: Bradford Schumann and wife, Meredith, Keli Thomas and her husband, Nic, and Kenny Linder; two great grandchildren: Eloise Thomas and Myles Schumann; four step grandchildren: Katy, Ayden, Audrey, and Stacy; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends and co-workers.
