Tamsin "Tammie" Bloom Unangst, 90, of White Stone, VA died on December 19, 2024. Tammie was born on January 7, 1934 in Tyrone, PA to Samuel J. and Marian Ardry Bloom. Throughout high school in Indiana, PA, Tammie authored a features column for the local newspaper, volunteered as a Sunday School teacher at the local Presbyterian Church, and sold programs at the high school athletic events to earn money for tuition and board at Pennsylvania State University. At Penn State she studied journalism and served as the first female editor of the Penn State Collegian newspaper.
While attending college, Tammie met and married the love of her life, Gilbert Unangst. She left college early to accompany Gil, who was then a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, to his first assignment in Germany, where she bore three children. Upon returning to the U.S., Tammie completed her degree in journalism through Penn State University, graduating with honors.
Throughout her life, Tammie volunteered her time and talent, serving as editor and writer of the Air Force Base magazines, heading Girl Scout activities at various Air Force bases, and as organizer and planner for the local Emergency Disaster program.
After several moves throughout the U.S., Japan and Germany, Tammie and Gil settled in White Stone, VA where she has lived for the past 40 years. Tammie loved to go on cruises and tours of Europe, Japan and Bermuda. She was an avid puzzle solver in all its forms, including crossword and jigsaw. She was pretty much unbeatable at card games, especially bridge. Simply put, she was a smarty pants.
Preceded in death by her husband Gil, Tammie is survived by her children John Unangst (Jane) of White Stone, Elizabeth U. Heller of O'Fallon, IL, and Steven Unangst (Paige) of Portland, OR; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Samuel Bloom of Dallas,TX and sister Nancy Terry of Charlotte, NC.
A private graveside service will be held after the holidays. The family asks in lieu of flowers for donations to be sent in Tammie's memory to her home church Calvary Presbyterian Church, 695 School Street, Indiana, PA 15701.
