THE PASSING OF TED WHEELER, LIFELONG FRIEND OF HAROLD BRADLEY
Oh how he rambled on and on and on and on about Harold. Ted truly idolized our dad and our dad truly idolized him.
Ted Wheeler and Harold kindled their deep friendship on the porch of Helen Lemme's legendary boarding house. They would sit for hours shooting the breeze, often, excitedly waiting for the trains to and from Chicago to roll by.
Harold's step-grandfather, Eddy Easter, worked as a parlor attendant and barber on one of those trains and anytime he would pass through Iowa City, he would leave a packaged filled with goodies for Harold - goodies that he and Ted were reputedly known to devour together.
The bonding that began on Helen Lemme's porch would flower into a life-long friendship - a friendship that not only brought Lena Hoffmeier into the Bradley family's lives but one that might not have withstood the ravages of age had it not been for her.
We are truly saddened by the news of Ted Wheeler's passing, yet we are also grateful for the 75 years of unstinting praises that he and Harold had for each other.
Ted's praises, along with those of his good friend Jim Wiese, were the spark and ensuing energy that catalyzed the University of Iowa to honor our dad with the Distinguished Alumni Award. https://www.foriowa.org/daa/daa-profile.php?namer=true&profileid=594#
We are not only truly grateful for the many hours that we could spend together with Ted, the last time, four months ago, in July, just over a year after our own dad's passing, we are also thankful for our sibling Lea's wherewithal on getting us to Iowa then.
Who would have known that the light of this energized man would have gone out so soon afterwards.
Ted and Harold last saw each other in Chicago, on October 13, 2019, on the occasion of Harold's 90th birthday. Harold passed away on April 13, 2021, two weeks after Iowa announced that he would receive his Achievement Award.
Our heartfelt condolence to Lena Hoffmeier, Jim Wiese and the entire Wheeler family. May they and everyone who had been emotionally touched by Ted be comforted and strengthed through joyful memories of him.
May Ted Wheeler's memory be a blessing.
In loving memory!
Harold's kids,
Michaela, Lea and Oliver
