Theodore Victor "Vic" Howie, Jr., 64, of Charlotte, N.C., passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with a rare neurodegenerative disease.

A worship service honoring Vic's life will be held Tuesday, July 1st at 1:00 pm at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226.

Born June 10, 1961, in Greenville, S.C., to Theodore Victor Howie, Sr. "Ted" and Jane Satterfield Howie, Vic was a graduate of J.L. Mann High School, Class of 1979, where he excelled in academics and baseball as catcher for the varsity team. His love of baseball was lifelong. He fondly recalled his years growing up in Greenville and remained in touch with his childhood friends his entire life.

Vic earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the College of Charleston in 1983. A lifelong supporter of his alma mater, Vic served on both the Alumni Association and Foundation Boards until his retirement in 2022. He was inducted into the Waites Waring Society for his service and was honored as the college's 2020 Business Person of the Year. He furthered his education with an MBA from Western Carolina University and earned the European Management Graduate Certificate from Hogeschool Brabant International School, The Netherlands.

After college, Vic remained in Charleston where he met his wife, Sherri Montgomery. They married in 1988, and Sherri was the love of his life for 37 years. They eventually settled in Charlotte, N.C., where they have lived for 27 years and raised their two children, Trey (31) and Caroline (27). Vic's family was his priority, and he was actively involved in the lives of his kids, from school and sporting events, friends, vacations, celebrations, to making pancakes on Saturday mornings. He was happiest with his family. Of all of his accomplishments, he was most proud of his family and loved them fiercely.

His 38-year career in banking and finance included leadership roles at Bank of America in North and South Carolina, where he served as Commercial Banking Relationship Manager, Senior Marketing Manager, National Quality Manager for Global Commercial Banking, Consumer Market Executive, and Senior Marketing Executive. He later became Chief Operating Officer of American Community Bank before following his passion in wealth management at Merrill Lynch and Raymond James. Vic built his business grounded in his core values of integrity, trust, and deep relationships.

Through BofA's sponsorship of the U.S. Canoe and Kayak Olympic Team, Vic developed a deep love for the sport and lasting friendships with its athletes and coaches. He helped create whitewater parks in Asheville and Charlotte and was a Founder, Chairman, and President of the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte. Vic strongly believed in serving and bettering the communities in which he was a part; giving back was not optional. His leadership extended to Charlotte Regional Partnership, Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, The United Way, Rotary and Optimist Clubs, as well as initiatives like the USNWC Whitewater Kids Club and Pitch Breakfast for start-ups. In 2015, Charlotte Agenda recognized him as one of "The 25 Most Important People in Charlotte's Start-Up Community."

In all of his years of service, Vic counted giving back to his faith home, St. John's Episcopal Church, among his favorite and most fulfilling. Throughout his 27 year membership, he served in countless leadership roles. Some of his dearest friendships were formed there. He was a man of faith, he walked the walk, and it was intertwined into every aspect of his life.

Vic lived and loved passionately. He enjoyed sharing his hobbies and past times with his friends and family. He loved music of all genres, traveling, the game of baseball, his "supper club" family, celebrating holidays, his "Survivors Golf Group", biking, collecting books, and the family pets. He lived with dignity, faith and a gratitude for life and brought his warmth, optimism and "all in" attitude into everything he did.

Vic is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Sherri Montgomery Howie, his son, Theodore Victor Howie, III "Trey", and daughter Caroline Elizabeth Howie (fiancé John McCauley). He is also survived by his sister, Kathryn Howie Bracknell (John), his brother, Walter Blair Howie (Denise) and his brother-in-law, George Bryan Montgomery (Lieschen), and 9 nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude for their compassionate care of Vic to Memory & Movement Charlotte, especially Dr. Sanjay Iyer and his team, the staff at The Ivey, Beverly Hughey and the caregivers at The Sanctuary at Stonehaven, and the VIA Health Partners-Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte care team, especially Annabelle McIntosh, RN and Tanya Burke, LCSW.

My deepest Condolences to Sherri and the kids and the Family. It was a privilege to know Vic. First meeting at St. John´s and then leaning on him as my financial advisor. He got me through the 2008 financial crisis; when I asked him if we should sell, he said hold tight. I listened to him ever since. I will miss him as an advisor, but more so as a friend. It was so good to see so many pay tribute to him at his funeral at St. John´s today. So well deserved. Wishing the family all of God´s love and peace during this difficult time.

When I hear Vic's name I recall a man who was unfailingly positive and upbeat, one who always found the good in people and events. I met Vic in my consulting work with Bank of America many years ago. He always smiled. I considered him a friend from our first interaction. My deep sympathies to his family at his loss.

So very sad to hear of the passing of this terrific person. I had the great pleasure of working with Vic in marketing early upon my arrival to Charlotte at the then Nation´s Bank. His energy, warmth, focus on positive impact, and willingness to step up to try new ideas - the Whitewater Center being but one example - were inspiring to all around him. My heart goes out to the family Vic cherished.

I had the sincere privilege of getting to know Vic when I worked at the Ivey. His warm smile and upbeat spirit filled the room. I enjoyed conversations with him about how he met Sherri, his kids, his work. He was always curious about the Senior Scholars I would present on various topics- asking questions; and had a love for 70´s music. I´m honored that I was able to have that time with him.

We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Vic Howie. We were so fortunate to have known Vic and his family through our church St. John´s Episcopal. My friendship also grew through being a youth advisor for Trey while he was in high school. It was a special Sunday to see Vic and his warm smile at St. John´s. Rest in peace, our friend!

While Vic sometimes said goodbye or `adieu mon cher ami´ - he would more often say, `Until next time´. A lover of people, family, travel, music, Church, food and drink. The most positive person I have ever known - and one that lifted you up. He remained fearless, focused and gentle; he inspired many to be greater than they were. A mountain among men in each community he soiled his hands in. A bass player and not the lead guitarist - his memory will remain the rhythm section of my life. We drank champagne together in Paris, calvados in Normandy and Bourbon in Charlotte - often with a cigar. What a friend, what a life, what a legacy! He is in each of us. Loving hugs to Sherri, Trey and Caroline - we are with you.

Vic was one of the first Alumni Board Members that I met when I started my job at CofC many years ago. Always warm and welcoming, he cared deeply for his alma mater and the people who made up its special community. He treated you like gold every time he saw you, and I´ll always remember how passionate he was about encouraging others to chase their dreams and go after the things that mattered. He always spoke about his family and was sure to ask you about yours. Vic was a true gem and my heart and prayers go out to his beautiful family and friends who I know he adored.

Grace and peace to the entire Howie family upon Vic's passing. I feel so blessed that Vic and I were great friends from elementary school to college. We had some great adventures together throughout it all. After college, we kept in touch and love that he fell in love with my sorority sister and he was pleased that I fell for a fellow banker (although a Yankee from VA)! Sherri, my heart hurts so much for you and the kids. Please know that we keep our memories of Vic close to our hearts as well and we pray your journey in grief is filled with wonderful memories and moments. Stacey and Kevin Reynolds

God bless you and your entire family in this time of deep sorrow. Vic was the ultimate inspiration for many of us that knew him. I met Vic my first freshman semester in 1982 and he was a true friend. Vic was not only smart but athletic, generous and funny. He was the consummate guy who made all people feel special around him. While maintaining his classes, he always made time for his social and athletic activities too. And even had time for some road trips to Myrtle Beach together to visit his fraternity friends. Vic was the most thoughtful and kind man all throughout his life and I feel very fortunate to have benefited from knowing him. He will be missed but not forgotten. God Bless him and his family- we were so blessed to have him.
